Birthday Songs
Songs as gifts

For the last 4 years, when December rolls around, I write my mother another birthday song. When I listen back to the song from 4 years ago, that first song was very elementary, a bit simple, a bit cringey. I won’t be sharing it here– but I’m so glad I have the record of where I was then in this songwriting journey.
I’ve said this before– I may not be a gifted musician, but I am a “gifting” musician. I love having an idea for a song that I can give to someone. Over time, I’ve gifted songs for many occasions: to go along with books, for birthdays, to celebrate retirement, to praise my husband’s grandma, to commemorate a change in the school rules, for 8th grade graduation, to harken in new babies and new life chapters.
Here are my mama’s 4 Birthday Songs.
Year 1 (2022): Little Miss Mary Sunshine- an ode to my mama
Year 2 (2023): Hula Hoop Mama- an ode to my mama’s sweet hula hooping habit
Year 3 (2024): Top Down- an ode to my mama’s sweet red Mustang convertible, Sally
Year 4 (2025): Take A Look- an ode to my mama’s murderous obsession with stink bugs
If you’re looking to give a gift on the cheap, maybe try your hand at a tune– I bet they’ll love it!
